Pamela’s Prompt: Just draw it.
When I was a teacher, I helped my students overcome the fear of a blank page by having them start with a drawing. I’m not artistic in the least and my drawings mainly consist of stick figures, so don’t stress.
First, take a blank piece of paper. Anything will do. In my class, we used the blank side of paper textbook covers. Next, grab some colored pencils or markers or crayons.
Now, think about a favorite childhood memory or somewhere that you fondly recall. Draw out that place. For me, I drew a football field. I was a majorette in school and I have many good memories of performing at games.
I drew a large rectangle to represent the field and then smaller rectangles to represent the stands. I made dots to represent people.
Then, I drew thought bubbles or circles on my picture and wrote in a sentence or even just a few words when I thought of a good memory. For instance, my words might be “laughter,” “good time,” or “winning game”.
Next, I added sensory details: What I saw (scoreboard); what I heard (cheers); what I smelled (popcorn); what I felt (nervous), etc.
Soon, I had lots of options for what to write about. It really helped my students and I hope it will help you, too.
Remember: Just draw it!
