Faith-Filled Fridays: Happy New Year!

Can you guess what significance this number has? 31,536,000.

No, it’s not the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Liechtenstein or the number of light bulbs on the Waterford crystal ball which will drop in NYC’s Times Square beginning at 11:59:00 p.m. (EST) tonight.

The number is how many seconds we will have in 2022. To come up with this number, I looked up the math on www.calculatorology.com (My apology to my high school algebra teacher. Mrs. Granzin, I didn’t perform the calculation myself!)

To calculate the number of seconds in a Gregorian, non-Leap Year, which has 365 days, smarter cookies than me figured out you have the multiply the number of seconds in one day with the total number of days. Stay with me here.

1 common year = 365 days

1 day = 24 hours x 3600 seconds = 86,400 seconds

365 days = (365 x 86400 seconds) = 31,536,000 seconds

Ouch! My brain hurts. Too much like those word problems in algebra class. I don’t even want to think how much time I’ve wasted watching 30-second TV commercials. But I digress.

The New Year has a set number of seconds. No more. No less. It’s up to each of us to make the most of these precious seconds of our lives. Though we can’t change how much time we are given, we can adjust how we spend our time.

I want to be able to more fully focus on God in the coming year. One way to do that is to worry less and pray more.

We can also turn to God’s Word:

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

“Trust in the Lord with all our heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (NASB)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made know to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Matthew 6:25-27 (NIV)

“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

My prayer for you in the coming year is that you will use as many of the 31,536,000 seconds of your life in 2022 to draw nearer to God. Be encouraged.

Happy New Year!
