Writing with Heart
Everyone has a story.
That simple notion has always been at the forefront of my professional life as a writer. From working as a journalist to becoming a writer of Christian historical novels, I have always loved to read and write stories about others, be they real or imagined. I’m probably the kind of person you hope you don’t sit next to on a long flight, because I love to ask questions and delve into what makes each person unique!
My love affair with stories began young. My mother constantly read to me and encouraged me to learn new things. My father was a twice-daily newspaper reader (back when there were morning and afternoon editions of the same newspaper) and he continues to be an avid reader.
I vividly remember the moment I knew I wanted to become a writer. I had just read Little Women and I was enamored of Jo March. She was everything I wanted to be. Resourceful. Creative. Determined. Most of all, though, she was a writer. I grabbed a notebook and a pen and an apple (because that’s what Jo did), and I climbed the pecan tree in my front yard. From my perch and hidden in the leaves, I spied on people as they walked or drove by or rode their bikes down my street. I jotted down what colors they were wearing, which direction they were heading, and then would imagine what they were planning to do in the next few minutes. In hindsight, it’s probably a good thing none of my friends and classmates ever found out, because they would have thought I was really strange!
A native of the small town of Miles, in West Texas, I earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. I have been a high school English teacher, an online elementary school spelling teacher, and a Bible class teacher. I’ve written for a variety of publications and newspapers. Currently, I’m a full-time marketing content writer, a true crime story afficionado, and a wannabe etymologist (someone who studies the language origins of words). I live in San Antonio, Texas, with my husband of 30-plus years, Mike, along with our dog, Hollis, and our two cats, Hogan and Quill. (Be sure to check out Quill’s Corner.) We have a daughter, Katherine, and a son-in-law, Lawson, who bring joy into our lives each day.
